Across 25 jobs: $100 × 25 = $2,500. That initial $2,500 savings is already gone. And that’s before accounting for:
- Equipment repairs or replacement (it is cheaper equipment, after all)
- Time spent troubleshooting issues
- Delays waiting for equipment to be ready or replacement parts
- Reduced crew productivity
- The cost of having equipment out of service
The point isn’t that the more expensive system is automatically the better choice, it’s that purchase price is only one part of equipment cost. Before choosing the cheapest equipment, calculate what it’s really going to cost you to own and operate.

A lower purchase price doesn’t mean much if you need to replace the equipment every year.
For example, let’s say you’re comparing two pieces of equipment, using the same numbers as we used earlier:
Cheap equipment: $5,000 with a useful life of 1 season
Higher quality equipment: $7,500 with a useful life of 4 seasons
Again, based on nothing more than the price tag, the $5,000 option looks like the better deal. But if you’re replacing it every season, four seasons of equipment costs you: $5,000 × 4 = $20,000.
The $7,500 equipment, on the other hand, costs: $7,500 × 1 = $7,500.
That means the equipment with the higher upfront price saves you $12,500 over four seasons.
Again, that’s only looking at the purchase price. The cheaper equipment will almost certainly require more repairs, replacement parts, and downtime. Replacing equipment every season also means time spent ordering, shipping, assembling, adjusting, and getting your crew familiar with the replacement system.
Bottom line, equipment lifespan is a big part of the equipment’s value.
The Cheapest Option May Not Support Your Growth
Many contractors start with equipment that works for the projects they have today. But successful companies grow and the equipment that works for a small job may not be the best choice when taking on larger siding replacements, multi-story homes, or higher-volume projects.
